the benefits of temping

Temporary work can be an effective way of maintaining a steady income whilst in between jobs, or can provide a more flexible long term arrangement if you have personal commitments that require flexibility of hours.

Remember that you can always say 'no' to an assignment if it does not suit your timetable or requirements!

here are answers to the most common questions people ask about temp work:

Q. Do I need to be an Australian resident?
answer - you do not need to be a permanent resident but you must hold a valid work visa that entitles you to be employed in Australia. We welcome travellers with a Working Holiday Visa.

Q. Can I register with other temp agencies?
answer - of course you are free to register with as many agencies as you please, however you may find that you receive better service by registering with fewer agencies and keeping in close contact with them.

Q. How much notice do I need to give if I find another job or want to leave a temp assignment?
answer - we will email the majority of the registration forms prior to your interview including a Temporary Agreement which requires you to give us one week's notice should you decide to terminate your employment with us for any reason. If you are able to give us a longer period of notice this would assist us greatly and be most appreciated.

Q. Am I paid for any sick leave and holiday leave?
answer - no, as a temporary employee any sick or holiday leave is unpaid, however a loading is included in your hourly rate to cover these leave periods. You need to remember that the agency loses income when temps do not attend assignments and that too much leave taken may mean that you will not be called as frequently by the agency.

Q. So what do I do if I am sick or unable to attend a temp assignment?
answer - it is imperative that you contact a consultant at McCormack Employment Services as soon as you become aware that you will be unable to go to work. You will be given a business card with an emergency contact number at your interview - so it is essential that you call us and you can do so either during or after hours. We will convey these details to the client. We do ask that temp staff try to minimise unexpected leave wherever possible and we may require you to provide a medical certificate in certain circumstances.

Q. Can I accept a permanent position from a client that I am temping for?
answer - of course if you are a permanent resident! You must inform us as soon as someone approaches you or makes you an offer of permanent work as you are an employee of ours whilst you are temping for us. At that point the choice is yours to accept or decline the offer as long as the transaction takes place through us as your employer.
